@3CRAIG CHARLES CHARGED WITH RAPE
===============================
@2
Likely as not, most reading this have already heard about the arrest of
Craig Charles (Dave Lister of "Red Dwarf"). For those who haven't, the
following is reprinted without permission from "The Sunday Mirror" from
London, July 10, 1994:
@3Headline: Craig Charles Charged With Rape
@2
The chubby comedian is accused with another man of subjecting a thirty-eight
year old woman to a four hour sex ordeal. A third man is being hunted.
Charles, 29, stars as space ship crewman Lister in the cult BBC2 series. He
was taken to Vauxhall police station in south London where he was quizzed and
later charged. Charles, who was arrested on Friday night at his home on Tyler
Street, Kennington, south London, was refused bail and is due to appear
before South West Magistrates Court, Battersea tomorrow.
The assault allegedly occured at an estate in Clapham between six a.m. and
ten a.m. on Friday. The second man, company director John Peploe, 36, of
Crawford Road, Camberwell was also charged and held in custody pending a
court appearance. Scouse comedian, Charles, 29, was briefly married to actress
Cathy Tyson, who starred alongside Bob Hoskins in Mona Lisa. They have a son,
Jack, six. It was Red Dwarf - now filming its sixth series (??-rb) that shot
Charles to fame. Current repeats on BBC2 at nine p.m. on Fridays regularly
attract 4.5 million viewers. Charles plays curry loving Dave Lister, the sole
survivor of a space ship disaster. His only companions are a humanoid robot,
a hologram of another crew member and a creature descended over millions of
years from the ship's cat. The trials and tribulations have made Red Dwarf
the channel's most successful programme. When the last series was shown, an
average of seven million viewers tuned in.
REMAKE
The BBC also recently completed a #4 million deal with Eddie
Murphy and Ted Danson for a big screen Hollywood remake of the sci-fi
comedy romp.
The show's success has also made a star of Chris Barrie who
plays hologram Rimmer. Barrie switched to mainstream success as
accident-prone Gordon Brittas in The Brittas Empire.
Charles has found it harder to cross over. A bid to pioneer a
virtual reality game show hosted by hime called Cyberzone failed to take
off.
And a children's show called Weather Watch ended after the
initial six episodes.

I don't know what to make of this last part. Getting back to the first part,
assuming it's true, that report is terrible enough for both Craig Charles and
the woman involved. Selfishly speaking, if Charles DID commit this act of
violence, then he will not be around to perform in "Red Dwarf" Season 7. And
even if the whole thing turns out to be a hoax or he is exonerated, I suspect
the BBC would still be less than thrilled at having him back. Where this
leaves Grant/Naylor, who can say? Bottom line: Season 6 could turn out to be
the end of "Red Dwarf."
The news about the movie leaves me in a state of not knowing whether to laugh
or cry. It's unfair, I know, to prejudge something without seeing it,but with
Hollywood's track record when it comes to this sort of thing, can anyone
honestly say they are looking forward to it? I mean, Ted Danson as Lister
(presumably) and Eddie Murphy as Cat? I think I'm going into self-destruct
mode right about now...any comments?
